Santos Reveals He Declined Contract Extension
Greece manager Fernando Santos has revealed that he will not be extended his contract with the national team after the end of the World Cup 2014. Greece will be taking part in this competition, as they have managed to overcome the difficulties faced by the nation to achieve incredible things from sporting level. Santos has been part of the Greek team that has enjoyed a lot of success in recent years. Despite being Portuguese, he became the national team manager after Otto Rehhagel in 2010. The team managed to reach the quarter-finals of the Euro 2012 and now will be playing in the third consecutive World Cup.
Santos has also been incredibly successful at club level as well. He has managed the likes of Panathinaikos, AEK Athens, and PAOK Salonika as a manager at club level. Despite not being a Greek citizen, he has managed to win the admiration of the National supporters with his work over the last few years. It is expected that the 59-year-old will return to club management in order to have all that will provide him with day-to-day involvement with football. After starting the World Cup 2014 with a group match against Colombia, Santos will be hoping to get his players past the group stages that also involves matches against Ivory Coast and Japan.
According to the bookmakers, Greece have a great opportunity to reach in the latter stages of the competition due to the favourable group stage draw. Again of the tournament, Santos said: “I’ve just informed the members of EPO administrative council that Fernando Santos will end his tenure with the Greek national team after the World Cup finals.” The 59-year-old has not revealed his future plans just yet and it will be clear once the World Cup 2014 comes to an end.
