Fernando Santos resigned as Manager
Greece were looking for a long era under their next manager after it was announced that Fernando Santos would not be staying on as coach after the World Cup 2014. Former Chelsea and Roma manager Claudio Ranieri was brought as the replacement for Santos.
However, he did not last long in the job since a lot of turmoil saw him sacked after just a few months of action. He was replaced by the 70-year-old, Sergio Markarian. He had been working with Greek legend Giorgos Karagounis, who was appointed as the director of football. However, there have been rumours about a rift between the two for quite a while.
Just five months into his role as the Greek manager, Markarian gave his resignation to the football Association president. Greek took a long time to convince the 70-year-old to stay at the job. This was due to a combination of on and off the field issues that have been plaguing the country as a whole. However, Greek FA president George Gkirtzikis has not been successful in convincingMarkarian to stay. The resignation has been accepted by the football Association, who have placed Kostas Tsanas as the coach of the team on an interim basis. Kostas Tsanas takes care of the Greek under 21 team.
“At the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) the following decisions, among others, were made: to end the cooperation with Mr Markarian and (assistant coach) Mr Marsenaro by mutual consent and without any further financial burden on the federation.EPO has also decided to terminate the contract of Mr Karagounis and end the collaboration with assistant coach Mr (Nikos) Kostenoglou under the provisions of the contract,” said the EPO in a statement. “I came to Greece for the national team at a critical moment and took on a difficult job,” said Markarian.
