Chris Coleman is pretty clear that he would not pay attention
Chris Coleman, the manager of the Wales national Football team, is pretty clear that he would not pay attention to what the managers of the clubs of the players want and would pick the squad which he believes is fit enough to take part in the coming friendly versus Netherlands.
Quite a few managers have raised concerns regarding the fact that their Wales internationals are getting used too much in friendly fixtures.
But, according to Coleman, he would not consider resting players unless he feels there is a valid reason to it.
Speaking yesterday in the press conference, the 45-year old former Swansea City defender said, “If a player has a niggle or he has just recovered from injury or he has played a hell of a lot and there’s a danger of him pulling up something, then I can understand that. But, without reason, none is entitled to tell me how I should be selecting my squad.”
“I want to know if the club bosses will appreciate it if they are told by us that a particular player should be rested for a particular game as there’s an international game coming up.”
“More often than not, we make sure when the players return, they are in the right shape, but, when they are with the national team; it is up to me to decide for how much time they should be put on the pitch and my decision is not going to be influenced by the outsiders.”
“And, friendly is just a term. It’s never quite a friendly fixture when two teams out there are representing their respective nations. It gets highly competitive and people come in stadiums in big numbers. They have every right to watch the top players perform.”
